The Itinerary

Saturday

February 12th

Depart the USA. We are holding seats on the KLM flight from Newark to Amsterdam with onward connections directly into Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Sunday

February 13th

This morning you land in Amsterdam and connect with the KLM flight to Kilimanjaro.

Your flight arrives at Kilimanjaro International Airport this evening and we will meet you and drive you into Arusha where we overnight at King's Cottages.

Monday

February 14th

A relaxing day today as we get over jet lag. We will have a casual tour of Arusha and lunch.

In the afternoon we meet with our guides and double check everyone's equipment.

Tuesday
Short Hike

February 15th

Our trek starts today.

After a good breakfast our guides will drive us to Mount Kilimanjaro where we sign in and join our porters.

Our hike will take us into the Rainforest at the base of Kilimanjaro. It is beautiful in the forest and we will see signs of wildlife, such as elephant, although the noise of our passage will have driven them into cover, beautiful birds and brightly colored flowers. Our camp will be set in the Forest.

Wednesday
Longer Hike

February 16th

The trek quickly takes us out of the Rainforest and into the Heath Zone. The trail will lead us through incredibly tall heather.

Lunch will be at the base of the Shira Plateau. After lunch we hike up the ridgeline and onto the Shira Plateau where camp will be waiting for us.

This is where you get your first view of Kilimanjaro.

Thursday
Short Hike

February 17th

A shorter hike today as we make our way across the Shira Plateau to the base of Kibo. The going is easy with a largely level walk until we ascend to Fischer Camp at the end at the end of the hike.

Friday
Longer Hike

February 18th

A longer day today as we make our way up to the Lava Tower. We will hike out of the last remaining vegetation and into the Highland Desert.

Saturday
Rest Day

February 19th

A rest day! You have all day to explore the area around the Lava Tower or, for those who wish a short climb to its top.

The Lava Tower is the core of a volcano that erupted from the side of the vastly bigger Kibo and it makes for a fun scramble.

This rest day is a great aid in your acclimatization and will really help you as you push on to the summit.

February 20th

Arrow Glacier Camp

Another short hike today as we leave Lava Tower and head sharply uphill to Arrow Glacier Camp which is located at the start of the Artic Zone.

Arrow Glacier is one of the glaciers still remaining on Kilimanjaro and this afternoon we will have the opportunity to explore it.

February 21st

Furtwangler Camp

A long but fun hike today as we climb up the Western Breach and into the crater of Kibo.

Camp will be set alongside the Furtwangler Glacier.

February 22nd

Summit Day!

After breakfast we make the short hike to the summit of Kilimanjaro. We will reach the summit around 8:30 and have time to enjoy the thrill of being on top of the highest mountain in all Africa.

After lots of pictures we start our descent. And, remarkably, will descend almost half the mountain today before camping at Mweke Camp.

Wednesday
Trek Ends

February 23rd

This morning we complete our descent of Kilimanjaro and will reach the Mweke Gate and the end of our trek by lunchtime.

After collecting our certificates showing that we successfully reached the summit of Kilimanjaro we will drive back to Arusha and well deserved showers!

This evening we celebrate our success with a party and dinner at King's Cottages.

Thursday

February 24th

All too soon your vacation is drawing to a close and those of us heading back to the USA will have the day at leisure. Transport will be available for anyone who wants to explore Arusha and shop for souvenirs.

After an early dinner we will transfer you to Kilimanjaro airport and help you check in for your flight back to Amsterdam.

Friday

February 25th

You arrive in Amsterdam this morning and connect with your onward flight to the USA. You will be home this afternoon.
