Optional Safari Extension
February is not only a good time to climb
Kilimanjaro it is also the very best time to see the Great Migration in the
Serengeti. This is truly one of the natural wonders of the world and if you
have the opportunity to extend your stay in Tanzania we encourage you to do so.
You will not regret it.
We have designed a short post trek safari that
takes us to the unequalled Ngorongoro Crater and into the Serengeti and if you
have the time to stretch your trip we encourage you take advantage of this
opportunity. This is also a good way for friends and family who were not able
to take the trek to join you in Tanzania and to share your experiences.
The Itinerary - 6
Days / 5 Nights on Safari
Day 13: Thursday
February 24th: After breakfast, you will be driven west to the
Ngorongoro Crater. This is about a four hour drive, a good drive as you pass by
Lake Manyara National Park and climb up the steep sides of the Rift Valley from
where you can see Lake Manyara stretching away to the South. We often see herds
of elephant on the plains beneath and you should watch for the baboons along
the roadside and Maribou Storks in the trees.
At the Ngorongoro Park gate there is a small
museum you may enjoy and a shop selling all sorts of interesting articles,
guide books and similar things. From the gate the road winds steeply uphill as
you climb towards the rim of Ngorongoro. The landscape will have changed as you
are now in a Montane Forest eco system, which you will recognize from you
Kilimanjaro trek, and you will start to see sign of elephant and Cape buffalo.
The first time you see the crater, from a 'lookout' that suddenly appears as
you drive to the top of what remains of the once vast volcano, is an
unforgettable experience. It is, we believe, one of the great views in the
world. The crater floor is some 1,000 feet beneath you and stretches away about
as far as the eye can see and nothing you have seen on film or television does
it justice. It simply has to be seen to be believed.
You will continue along the rim of the crater to
your hotel, the Serena.

Day 14: Friday
February 25th: Today you have a private, full day tour of the
Ngorongoro Crater. Enjoy! The Ngorongoro Crater is home to some 30,000 mammals
and is one of the most exciting wildlife viewing areas we have ever seen. We
suggest you take a picnic and spend the whole day in the Crater.
Your safari guide and vehicle will stay with you
throughout the itinerary. This is an important benefit as it means you will not
be dependent upon the scheduled services provided by the lodges, or dependent
on the whims of other travelers. If you want to stay on a particular animal
sighting longer your guide will be only too happy to oblige.

Day 15: Saturday
February 26th: After breakfast your guide will drive you out of
the Ngorongoro Crater and into the Serengeti.
En route you may stop at Olduvai Gorge. The
'Crater of Mankind' is world famous for the Archaeological discoveries made
there by Dr. Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey.
The Great Migration will be gathering in the
short grass plains between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti for its
annual calving. You will see, over the next two days, the incredible sight of
countless wildebeest and zebra, stretching in endless lines as they travel
across the Serengeti looking for new grass. They will be followed by the
predators; lion, hyena, jackals, eagles and vultures and it is quite
fascinating to be a close observer as the circle of life unfolds before
you.
Your home for the next three nights will be a
Luxury Mobile Tented Camp specifically located to give you the very best access
to the Migration.
