Gorilla Tracking

Gorilla Tracking

Gorilla Gorilla Berengei - Tracking the Mountain Gorilla

5 nights / 6 days gorilla tracking

Imagine walking slowly and quietly through the Impenetrable Forest of Bwindi when your guide beckons you forward and there, just in front of you, is one of the most endangered species on earth, the magnificent Mountain Gorilla.

This is probably the most exciting safari experience you will ever have. The forest is thick, your quarry scarce, you are on foot and suddenly you are surrounded by the gorillas who seem as curious about you as you are about them.

It is estimated that only 650 of these magnificent cousins of ours still exist and they are all in the mountainous region of southwestern Uganda, and the surrounding countries of Rwanda and the Congo. Our itinerary will take you to the Impenetrable Forest of Bwindi in the beautiful country of Uganda, the most comfortable and reliable destination for viewing these magnificent creatures.

  • 1 night White Horse Inn on a fully inclusive basis. This colonial style hotel is set high on the hills of Kabale with its beautifully manicured gardens. Each room now has hot/cold water with private facilities. Nice bar with open fireplace and a good restaurant.

  • 3 nights Gorilla Forest Camp on a fully inclusive basis. This exclusive location is a permanent luxury tented camp with 8 double tents, raised on wooden platforms, each with en suite facilities and hot and cold running water, WC, basin and a bathtub looking out onto the forest. Each tent has a spacious wooden verandah where guests can relax, enjoy a private meal and absorb the exotic mystery of the surrounding rainforest. This is the ideal base for gorilla tracking, primate viewing and birding excursions in the park.

  • 1 night Lake View Hotel, Mbarara on a fully inclusive basis. Set on beautiful green grounds surrounded by colorful flowering trees and bushes. It overlooks the legendary Lake of the Obugabe. The rooms are spacious and fully equipped to international standards.

Note on Gorilla Tracking Permits:

There are only two groups of Mountain Gorillas that we are allowed to visit at Bwindi, the H and M groups. Just 6 permits are issued for each group per day; they are in high demand and may be booked as much as 12 months in advance. It is critical that we book your permits as early as possible to avoid disappointment. The permits do have to be paid in full at time of booking and are currently $275 per permit per day.

Tracking the Mountain Gorilla

Uganda came as a very pleasant surprise to us. We were thrilled to discover very good roads, first class accommodations and delightful people. Uganda has by far the best infrastructure of all the East African countries we visit. .

Gorilla Tracking is a fantastic opportunity to get very close to the magnificent gorillas. It involves tracking the gorillas through the Impenetrable Forest, which is a montane forest that cloaks the mountainsides in Bwindi. The tracking is both on and off trail as you follow the gorillas from their previous nights nesting area to their new feeding location. It involves tracking uphill and you are at quite a high altitude; your camp is based at about 4,500 feet and you will climb higher to discover the gorillas. So some element of fitness is required.

We recommend that you make the gorilla tracking the final part of your East African vacation so that you can acclimatize while comfortably on safari in either Kenya or Tanzania, both of which will take you to altitudes of 6,000 feet or more.

The montane forest is a rain forest, what we used to call jungle, and it is fabulously dense. Real Tarzan stuff! You should expect rain and humidity and have a lightweight, waterproof jacket and pants to help keep you warm and dry and have similar protection for your camera.

After your flight from Nairobi to Entebbe you will be met by our representative in Uganda and your driver / guide for your gorilla itinerary. It is a lovely drive, in your private vehicle, through the countryside west towards Bwindi and Kabale where you overnight at the White Horse Inn.

The next morning you continue your drive into Bwindi arriving at the Gorilla Forest Camp in time for lunch. This afternoon you can relax or take a short walk through the Park to the waterfall - watch for monkeys.

Your first day of gorilla checking starts at 9am when you are briefed by the National Park guides. You then track the gorillas to their new feeding place. When you find the gorillas you have a whole hour to watch and marvel at these incredible animals as they live all around you - it is absolutely fascinating and the hour flies by!

The next day you get to experience the thrill of the gorillas again as you track the second group.

After breakfast you leave Bwindi and drive to the Lake View Hotel, Mbarara where you spend the night before continuing on to Entebbe Airport where your guide will assist you with check in for your flight back to Nairobi.
